Rev. Donald J. Czapla appointed Pastor of St. Cecilia

Archbishop Jackels has appointed Father Don Czapla, presently pastor of St. Matthew Church, Cedar Rapids, as the next pastor of St. Cecilia effective July 14, 2020.  At the same time the Archbishop has officially accepted my request to retire from active ministry effective also on July 14.

This is a homecoming for Father Czapla.  A native of Nebraska, as a student Father Czapla studied at Iowa State and after graduation entered seminary formation for the Archdiocese of Dubuque from St. Cecilia’s parish.  Ordained on May 31, 2003 (coincidently the same date I was ordained a “few” years before!) Father Czapla celebrated  his Mass of Thanksgiving here.  Prior to his transfer to St. Matthew’s last year he previously served as pastor of the former St. Henry Church (now St. Francis of Assisi).  Father Don speaks Spanish which will be a great gift to our Hispanic community.

In addition, the Archbishop has also appointed Rev. Benjamin Nkrumah from the Archdiocese of Kumasi in Ghana to provide help to both Father Czapla and Father Digmann at St. Thomas and to cover Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Gilbert.  Father Nkrumah’s appointment is effective on July 14.  He will be living with Fr. Kyle at his residence.

Please pray for Fathers Czapla and Nkrumah as they transition to our community.

Fr. Jim Secora
