PRINCIPAL NOTES – September 7, 2018

NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL

School Pictures – September 11th

Please look for your school picture order form in your child’s Friday folder. Pete Tekippe Photography will be taking our class pictures on the morning of September 11th. The 4-year-old preschool class students may come in that morning (8-11 a.m.) to have their pictures taken or may have their pictures taken on the retake day when they will be in session.

Please make sure your child brings back their school picture order form, even if they are not placing an order as this saves on many phone calls home. If you are not placing an order, please just put your child’s name and ‘no order’ on the form. All order forms can be returned to your child(ren)’s teacher on September 10th or the morning on September 11th. All students who have a picture taken will receive a class composite picture.

If you wish your child to wear their Sunday best or another outfit, other than their school uniform, please have them come dressed for pictures and send their uniform in their backpack to change into immediately following.

Tornado and Fire Drills

We have been completing the mandatory tornado and fire drills and have three more this school year. If your child expresses any concerns about the drills, please take the opportunity to discuss with them that they are only drills. It may be a good time to rehearse these drills at home while the students are doing the same here at school.

Safe Environment Training for Volunteers

ALL background checks and safe environment training are now online through CMG (Catholic Mutual Group) at https://dubuque.cmgconnect.org with the exception of one form — see below under NEW Employee and Volunteers.

CURRENT Staff and Volunteers
(anyone who has previously completed the VIRTUS training)

All will be required to be “Retrained” by completing the Safe Environment online video through CMG (Catholic Mutual Group). This will replace the Virtus training and monthly bulletins.

If you already have a CMG account (ie: from safe driver training) use that account. If not, use the following user name and password. User name: firstname.lastname.aod (ex: joe.smith.aod) Password: 1234 (suggest resetting on first login)

Go to https://dubuque.cmgconnect.org to complete the retraining.

Please complete this training by September 28, 2018.

Retraining is for anyone who is currently active AND has had a background check previously completed.

NEW Employees and Volunteers

All will be required to go to the link: https://dubuque.cmgconnect.org. There, they will be able to set up a new account, complete the online safe environment training and enter their personal information for a background check AND they will have to complete 1 form, the DHS “Authorization for Release of Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Information”. Please complete by September 28, 2018.

The need for the one form is a very recent change because Iowa DHS had previously approved online access for Selection.com to check the abuse registries, however, now is only allowing manual submission. Selection.com is continuing to work with DHS and we hope this is only temporary.

The completed DHS Authorization for Release of Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Information should be completed and returned to the school office by September 28, 2018.

Physical Education volunteers needed

Mrs. DuBois is in need of a few volunteers on September 17-18 in the mornings and right after lunch to help her during our fishing unit. You don’t need to know anything about fishing, just need to be able to assist with management and untangling lines. Please e-mail Mrs. DuBois at sdubois@stceciliaschoolames.org if you are able to help out. Thanks!

Family School Association Information

Please see the attached sheet for information about St. Cecilia’s Family School Association (FSA). This sheet explains more about FSA, how to be involved, and how FSA dues and fundraisers support the events and items FSA provides throughout the year. Please note that FSA dues are $10 per child and can be sent to school with your child. Checks can be written to St. Cecilia FSA. There is also information about the opportunity for school families to advertise their businesses in the school directory.

SCRIP

What is Scrip? Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. At St. Cecilia, scrip is gift certificates to many local and national businesses. Scrip is also the name of a national, on-going fund raising program used to distribute business donations to non-profit organizations. Organizations like St. Cecilia purchase gift certificates from businesses at a discount and then sell them to their supporters at face value.

Example: 1) St. Cecilia purchases a $10 gift certificate from Hickory Park for $9.

2) St. Cecilia sells the $10 gift certificate to the Smith Family for $10, making a $1 (10%) profit.

3) The Smith Family uses the gift certificate just like cash at Hickory Park, redeeming the certificate for $10 in food.

Therefore, Hickory Park donated $1 to St. Cecilia Education, thanks to the Smith Family’s purchase. Hickory Park is happy because they received increased business and advertising. The Smith Family is happy because they received $10 in food from their $10 certificate which generated a $1 donation to St. Cecilia Education with no out-of-pocket expense to them. (They would have gone to Hickory Park and spent $10 anyways.) St. Cecilia is happy to receive the donation to support their education programs. You can also chose to use 50% of the profits to help pay your school or faith formation tuition. Everyone wins! Please see the attached for more details. Scrip has started taking orders again on Monday mornings, so please turn your order into the school office by 9 a.m.
