PRINCIPAL NOTES – March 7, 2019

Parent-Teacher Conferences & Lost/Found Table
Please review our conference week schedule below (under School Events) as we do NOT follow Ames or Gilbert Community School schedules. Parent-Teacher conferences are next Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12th and 13th. If you cannot make the time you signed up or were signed up for, please contact the school office asap. Please be prompt since conference times are 15 minutes long. We will also have a LOST & FOUND table out, so please make sure to look for your child(ren)’s items. Thank you.

First Grade Can Drive
Both first grade classes will be holding a nonperishable food drive on the morning of Wednesday, March 13. The First grade students will collect food from cars in the drop-off lane that morning. Thank you for helping us teach your children about the importance of giving. All food collected will be given to Bethesda Community Food Pantry. Thank you.

No Principal Notes
Due to the short conference week and Spring break following the next week, we will not post any Principal Notes during the weeks of March 11th or 18th. Enjoy this time with your families. See you back on Monday, March 25th.

Kids Heart Challenge
Thank you to everyone to helped out with the American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser. We raised $3561.00 this year to help with heart research and programming. The Heroes Heart Party for those students who collected at least $100 will be sometime after spring break and the rest of the thank you gifts should also be coming after break.

FACTS – Student Tuition Organization
The Our Faith, Our Children, Our Future School Tuition Organization (STO) and St. Cecilia School are pleased to once again provide tuition assistance to qualifying families. New this year is families whose 2018 taxable income is at or below 400% of the federally determined poverty rate may qualify for an award. STO funds are only available for K-12th grade students. St. Cecilia School has made arrangements to pay the $31 fee for all families to apply. Once your 2018 taxes are complete, please file for FACTS. Please see the attachments for more information, including deadline information and help sessions date and times. Please call the school office with any questions or concerns.

We are asking any parents who feel they would be eligible for tuition assistance to please complete your application as soon as possible. You will need to upload your 2018 tax return and all requested 2018 income documentation…..

What tax materials do I need to complete the application?
The Iowa legislature requires that families verify their taxable income from the previous calendar year so you will need to upload your 2018 tax return and all requested 2018 income documentation. Families are urged to carefully review all tax documentation requirements stated on the application and to submit those materials as early as possible.
The following supporting documents are required to complete the application process:
`2018 IRS Federal Income Tax Return, including all supporting schedules.
`Copies of all 2018 W-2 Wage and Tax Statements for both the applicant and co-applicant. (NOTE: If you are applying before you have received all the current year W-2 Wage and Tax Statements, please submit them as soon as they become available.)
`Copies of all supporting tax documents if you have business income/loss from any of the following:
`Business – send Schedule C or C-EZ and Form 4562 Depreciation and Amortization
`Farm – send Schedule F and Form 4562 Depreciation and Amortization
`Rental Property – send Schedule E (page 1)
`S-Corporation – send Schedule E (page 2), Form 1120S (5 pages), Schedule K-1 and Form 8825
`Partnership – send Schedule E (page 2), Form 1065 (5 pages), Schedule K-1 and Form 8825
`Estates and Trusts – send Schedule E (page 2), Form 1041 and Schedule K-1

How do I submit the supporting tax documents?
After completing the online application, you will need to upload all required supporting documentation. Documents can be uploaded online by logging in to your account. The submissions can be in pdf or jpeg form. (Photos uploaded from a mobile phone are acceptable.) If you have any difficulties uploading your information they can be faxed to 866-315-9264. If you need help scanning or faxing your documents, please stop by the school office for assistance. Families are encouraged to submit tax documentation as early as possible. Please allow FACTS two weeks to process tax documents.

Please mark your calendars for March 9th from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. FSA is having a rollerskating winter event at Spinning Wheels in Ogden. The cost is $5 per skater. If you are unable to cover the cost, please let Sara Leto know at and FSA will help.

Welcome a New Baby
Tracy, Neal, Brooke (preschool) and Ria Molitor welcomed a new baby girl, Saige, last week! Please consider signing up to bring a meal to this sweet St. Cecilia family.

Book Fair
Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

-Set the example. Let children see you read.
-Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills.
-Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings to school the books kids want to read. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Help us promote healthy exercise by being a part of Mileage Club! The program begins Monday, March 25th (week following spring break) and we need you to make it successful.

The eight-week program is sponsored by Mary Greeley Medical Center, and encourages kids to become more physically active and healthy by walking and running at recess. Students earn toe tokens for every 5 miles of walking or running, and a grand prize at 25 miles! Mileage Club takes place during lunch recesses, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. We are looking for parent volunteers to help scan QR codes with iPads. It’s a very simple task and a lot of fun to be part of the excitement! Grades 3-5 have recess at 11:40-12:00 and K-2 from 12:00-12:20. We will begin on Monday, March 25th.

FRUIT AND VEGGIE TRACKING: Please look for a yellow tally sheet in your child’s Friday folder this week. Help your child record all fruits and vegetables they eat starting the week of March 25th. When the tally sheet is filled, sign the sheet and return it with your child to school. Students will receive a prize when 50 fruits and 50 vegetables have been eaten and recorded. (Please note, the sheet states “new fruits/veggies tried,” this sheet can include any fruit or vegetable eaten.) IF your child does try a NEW fruit or vegetable, please simply jot the name of the food on a sheet of paper, include the child’s name and your signature and send back to school. I will award a fruit toe token or veggie toe token for each NEW food they try. There are no limits to earning these tokens, as long as you send a note each time.

Did you know that every penny you purchase through the St. Cecilia Scrip program adds up to be a substantial benefit to your school? If each family at St. Cecilia bought even SOME ($200/month) of their groceries with Scrip, the school would benefit approximately $50 per year per family. Alone, this doesn’t seem like a lot, BUT…
If EVERY family bought all of their groceries with Scrip, the school would benefit over $8,000!! Together, we really can do great things to help our school.

Kids Run for Kids 2019
This youth run at Brookside Park in Ames is a fun event for young runners (to age 12), with 1k, 2k, 3k and 4k options. Parents or older siblings are encouraged to run with their kid. Enjoy family-fun activities such as mini-golf, face-painting, bookmobile and crafts, as well as a police patrol car and fire engine on site. The first run begins at 9am. See the Kids Run for Kids website for more information and to register. Runners registered by April 10th are guaranteed a race shirt. Late registrations and walk-up registrations will be accepted.
