Middle School
Youth Group

YIKES!
Youth Increasing their Knowledge about Everything  Spiritual

Mission:   To create a FUN, supportive, Christian environment where Middle Schoolers can spend time with friends and learn how to live out their Catholic Christian values in everyday life.

WHAT WE DO:  We start at 7pm and open with prayer and play a few FUN  games/icebreakers to get to know everyone better.  Then you get to choose your activity:  DODGEBALL, X-Box (sports games or Dance Revolution), volleyball, shoot hoops, or just hang out and catch up with friends!  Of course, we have to  EAT !!!    Later, we get together for announcements and a talk.  Sometimes, one of our leaders gives a talk, other times we have a guest speaker.  This year our FOCUS is the  Beatitudes (see below). You’ll have a great time- come check us out!

YIKES FOCUS 2007-08:  This year our talks will be about the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12).  These are the AWESOME promises Jesus’ made us for living a Christian life:

Blessed are the poor in spirit for the kingdom of heaven is theirs,

Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted,

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be satisfied,

Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth,

Blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy,

Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God,

Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God,

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

We’re going to learn what these mean and how they relate to you, as a middle schooler.

Meet our Leaders
:

Jon Weber:   HI! I’m Jonathan Weber and I am one of the Middle School Youth Group Leaders.  I work as a carpenter building decks and houses.  I am also very involved with the youth at St. Cecilia as a catechist and as a leader on the Appalachia Service Trip.  I have been involved with the Middle School Youth Group since it’s beginning.  I like giving talks and most of all- playing DODGE BALL!  You can reach me by e-mail at:  jweb2003@hotmail.com.

Judy Rudman:   Hi everyone!  My name is Judy and I have been involved with YIKES since the very beginning.  I've lived in Ames for 10 years (I'm really from warm, sunny Florida).  I have 3 kids (ages 3, 6, and 8) who are loads of fun and a great husband.  I really like getting to know all you middle school students- you've got great energy and enthusiasm!  If you have any ideas about what you'd like to see in YIKES, e-mail me and let me know:  j.rudman@mchsi.com.  This is YOUR youth group and we want to know what you think!  Look forward to seeing YOU on Wednesday nights!

Casy Ungs:   Hi! I’m Casy Ungs.  I am a junior at Gilbert High School. I run cross country, track, and I play baseball.  I love to hunt, fish, and be outdoors.  I work at the McDonalds on Duff.   I have gone to St. Cecilia my whole life.  I have gone on the Appalachia service trip the past two years.  I have been involved in the Middle School Youth Group since the second or third time they met.  I enjoy playing the games and talking with everyone.  You can reach me at ghsxcrunner1@hotmail.com.

Anders Hurd:   Hey guys, My name’s Anders Hurd.   I’m sure you’ve probably seen me or my big family at mass and other St Cecilia events (All the blonds).  My family and I have been Catholic and members of St. Cecilia since 1999.  I’m the oldest of 8.  I have 6 brothers and 1 sister.   I’m currently going to Iowa State, majoring in Construction Engineering.   I love to build, hunt, ride, and train horses.   I also enjoy teaching riding lessons and hangin’ out with you youngsters.   I’m looking forward to having lots of fun with all of you and learning about our rich faith.   See ya soon!!

Josh Opheim:  Hi, my name is Josh Opheim.   This is my first year helping with YIKES and I'm having a great time doing it.  My hometown is Harlan, IA, which is about two hours west of Ames.  However, I've been in Ames for over four years now.  I recently graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State, and I'm now working as a structural engineer at WHKS & Co. here in town.  One interesting thing about me is that I'm a convert to the Catholic faith, and I thank God everyday for it.

Julia Hanson:   Hey, I'm Julia Hanson.  I am a junior at Ames High School.  I love watching sports, and I cheer for football, basketball and wrestling.  I have 5 younger siblings, and I love kids.  I participated on the Appalachia Service Trip in 2006, and I am going again this year.  I attended Saint Cecilia's Day School.  In my free time I enjoy reading, listening to music, and hanging out with my friends.   Look forward to seeing you at YIKES!

Alex Bortle:   Hi!  I'm Alex Bortle.  I am a freshman at Iowa State University, majoring in Business Management.  I joined a sorority this fall, Alpha Chi Omega.  In my free time I love shopping, talking, hanging out with friends, watching football, going to movies, really just about anything!  I have gone to St. Cecilia's my whole life, and have been involved with YIKES since last year.  This year, along with YIKES, I will be one of the 8th grade religious education teachers.  I work at Hickory Park.  If you need to reach me, my email is abortle@iastate.edu

Stephanie Shuey:   Hi! I’m Stephanie Shuey and I’m a freshman at Iowa State. I’m a design major and so that takes up a lot of my free time.  But in what free time I have I love hanging out with friends and going to sporting events.  I have gone to St. Cecilia’s all my life and I truly feel like I always have a home there. This year I am teaching 8th grade Religious Ed so I might have a few of you 8th graders! This is my first year helping out with YIKES and I can’t wait to get to know all of you and help you grow in a faith that has helped carry me through my life.

Mike Weber:   Hi my name is Michael Weber.  Most people call me Mike or Mikey.  I'm a sophmore at ISU majoring in Family, Finance, Housing and Policy.  As you probably know I'm Jon's little brother.  This is my first year being involved with YIKES.  I'm a member of ACACIA fraternity which is also where I'm living this year.  Many of you have probably seen me as a mass server over the years and a few of you have served with me.  I love it when I come back to St. Cecilia every weekend for mass, it's always a comforting place to be.  In my free time I like to sleep and hang out with friends.  If you have any questions or just want to talk email me at msweber@iastate.edu.  See you at YIKES!

Notes to Parents :
  1. Please sign a permission slip for your child to attend Youth Group if you haven’t done so already!
  2. We are ALWAYS in need of chaperones--for regular Wednesday night activities AND special events.  We appreciate that your child may not want you hanging around--but if each parent/family volunteered once--you’d only have to be there once every TWO years (at most)!  We NEED parent volunteers to help keep our kids safe and keep our program THRIVING so contact Judy Rudman at: j.rudman@mchsi.com to get on board!   THANK YOU!
